Cuthbertson brings a clinically informed perspective as a licensed marriage and family therapist to gun violence research

His research will focus on the consequences and impacts of firearm injuries and deaths on families and communities

Albany, NY — The Regional Gun Violence Research Consortium at the Rockefeller Institute of Government today announced the appointment of Caleb Cuthbertson, PhD, LMFT, as its first postdoctoral research fellow. Cuthbertson will expand the Consortium’s in-house research expertise in the areas of community violence prevention and firearm-involved violence survivorship.

Dr. Cuthbertson earned his PhD in human development and family science, specializing in couple and family therapy, from The Ohio State University. His research centers on the psychological and relational impacts of firearm injuries on individuals, families, and communities. As a licensed marriage and family therapist, Cuthbertson brings a clinically informed and systems-oriented perspective to the study of gun violence.

We are incredibly grateful to Governor Hochul and the New York State Legislature for their continued support of the Consortium, which made this important investment in our research team possible.”

I am especially excited to gain skills in translating research into evidence-informed policy recommendations, learn from leading scholars in the Consortium’s vast research network, and uplift the lived experiences of individuals, families, and communities impacted by gun violence.”

Prior to joining the Consortium, Cuthbertson served as a graduate research associate at The Ohio State University, where he contributed to suicide prevention and intervention research for youth experiencing homelessness. He was also selected as an inaugural training and mentorship fellow with the Black and Brown Collective for Community Solutions to Gun Violence.
